The Playworks Mission:
To improve the health and well-being of children by increasing opportunities for physical activity and safe, meaningful play.
Playworks is a non-profit organization that has been committed to enhancing schools throughout the United States for the past 15 years. Playworks began in Oakland, California and can now be found in 23 cities across the United States. Whittier International is very excited to partner with Playworks to create a supportive, welcoming environment for all of our students on the playground.
Each of the 380 schools across the nation that offers Playworks has a program coordinator or "coach" of it's own. (To learn about Whittier's Playworks coach, please click here.) These fully-trained coaches are at their school from beginning to end, and become a part of the school community, providing organized play and physical activity, by:
1. organizing games during recess,
2. providing individual class game times, and
3. running a leadership development program ("Junior Coaches") during school hours.
Playworks also provides homework support and physical activities, as well as developmental sports leagues during non-school hours.
