PTA-Sponsored Programs & Events

Volunteers are always needed! If you'd like to help, please contact the PTA the program/event's committee chair.

A primary function of the Whittier International PTA is to support school programs and events that celebrate the diversity of our community, enrich the learning environment for our students, and promote healthful living and wellness. Programs and events that we love and without which Whittier wouldn't be the same.

School Programs Supported by the PTA

MacPhail-Whittier Music Partnership: A partnership since the 1998-1999 school year! MacPhail brings premier musical and instrumental instruction to our K-5 students. For more information on this partnership, click here.

Amity Internship: The PTA contracts Amity Institute to provide an Amity Intern each school year. The Amity Intern assigned to Whittier is responsible for world language instruction for our K-1 students and supports the heritage language program for all grade levels K-5. For information on the Amity Internship program at Whittier and to meet this year's Amity Intern, please click here or visit Sra. Laden's staff page here. (Each school year we need at least two families to host the Amity Intern. If you are interested in hosting, please contact the volunteer lead for the Amity program.)

Over the years, the PTA has provided volunteers, seed money, and logistical support to various school programs. Examples of programs supported by the PTA in one way or another in recent years include:

School Events Supported by the PTA

Community Breakfast: Twice each school year, once in the fall (Sept-Oct) and once in the spring (May), the PTA works with our generous community partner, Common Roots Cafe, to provide a free breakfast for all Whittier families, students, staff, and teachers. This bi-annual event features healthy, delicious, locally sustainable food from Common Roots, as well as activities and information to get you thinking about everyday wellness for you and our planet.

The Community Breakfast is an opportunity to eat breakfast with your students, socialize with other Whitter families, get to know staff and teachers, and enjoy the diverse, vibrant community that is Whittier.

Please see the school calendar for this school year's fall/spring dates for the Community Breakfast. The Community Breakfast is from 8:15-9:30 a.m. in the main school cafeteria. All students must be accompanied by an adult until 9:30.

Scholastic Book Fair: The Scholastic Book Fair is typically run in the fall (October/November). Money raised through the book fair is used to supply new books to the Media Center and to grade-level classrooms.

Read-A-Thon: The Read-A-Thon is an annual, school-wide event focused on promoting reading among all students and raising money for our school and programs. The Read-A-Thon typically runs for 3 weeks during February.

Plant Sale: The annual plant sale runs each spring in May. Sale dates are the Thursday and Friday before Mother's Day. The PTA partners with Glacial Ridge Growers, a local nursery that grows exclusively pollinator-friendly plants, to provide a wide variety of perennials, annuals, herbs, and veggies for purchase. 50% of the purchase price goes directly to the PTA to support school-wide events and programs.
