Read-A-Thon
Make reading your superpower!

Coming soon: 2018 Read-A-Thon Information!

The 2018 Whittier Read-a-thon will be our 8th annual event to promote literacy, get kids excited about reading, and raise funds for classroom supplies, field trips, Amity intern, McPhail music program, and so much more. Help us raise $10,000 during this year’s Read-a-thon!

Students will receive Reading Logs to track minutes read (or minutes read to) during the event, and to track donations from:

  • Parents, grandparents, neighbors, babysitters, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and parents’ co-workers who donate money to the school.

All students who participate by turning in a Reading Log will be entered into a raffle drawing. If they meet their grade’s Reading Goal, they will receive an additional raffle ticket.

Students who collect donations to the school will also receive additional raffle tickets:

  • Collect $10-50, you will receive ONE additional raffle ticket
  • Collect $51-100, you will receive TWO additional raffle tickets
  • Collect $101-200, you will receive THREE additional raffle tickets
  • Collect $500 or more, you will receive FIVE additional raffle tickets

Prizes!

  • School-wide Prizes
  • Classroom Prizes: Each class with over 80% participation (students turning in a Reading Log) will earn a special reward for their entire class (like popcorn with the principal or extra recess).
  • Individual Prizes:

‚ÄčReading Goals

Record the minutes read at home each day on your Reading Log. Everyone who turns in a Reading Log gets a raffle ticket. Readers who reach these grade-level goals will receive an additional ticket:

  • Kindergarten goal: read 240 minutes (15 minutes/day)
  • 1st Grade goal: read 320 minutes (20 minutes/day)
  • 2nd Grade goal: read 400 minutes (25 minutes/day)
  • 3rd Grade goal: read 480 minutes (30 minutes/day)
  • 4th Grade goal: read 560 minutes (35 minutes/day)
  • 5th Grade goal: read 640 minutes (40 minutes/day)

At the end of the event, add up all your minutes read

  • Calculate and collect all pledges listed on your Pledge Form.
  • Put all forms and money in the envelope you were given (make sure your name is on all forms) and turn in to your teacher.

Parents

Please contribute $10 or more, so Whittier can continue to provide Amity Interns, classroom books & field trips, and music/arts programming (like MacPhail).

  • Be sure to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, siblings, neighbors, babysitters and friends to either give a donation or pledge per minutes read.
  • All students who track reading are eligible to win prizes. Additionally, all students who return at least $10 in donations will be entered to win more prizes.
  • Contributions can be made in cash, by check (payable to Whittier PTA), or online at http://squareup.com/store/whittier-international-pta
  • Check to see if your employer has a donation-matching program.
  • Only time spent reading during the Read-A-Thon dates count for the Read-a-thon.
  • Parents, friends, and older siblings may read to students. This counts towards minutes read.
  • If a student does not have time to collect from a sponsor before the deadline, s/he can still collect the money and turn it in to the PTA mailbox after the deadline. The Read-a-thon committee will work hard to include the money in the student’s Read-a-thon totals.

Please help us reach our goal of $10,000!
