The Reading Journey:
2018 Whittier Read-a-Thon

In 2018, Whittier celebrated reading and literacy during a three-week Read-a-Thon fundraiser that kicked off with an assembly on January 29, and ran through February 15th. During the three-week event, the whole school played The Reading Journey game — a board game-inspired voyage that starts by opening a book.

Students and classes competed for prizes and recognition based on most minutes read (normalized by classroom size), fundsraised, and new this year — teachers tracked minutes read at home, too.

We set out to raise $10,000 for PTA to pay for field trips, the MacPhail music partnership, full-time Spanish Amity Intern, classroom supplies, community events and more.

Each week, PTA gave reading progress reports as students and classes turned in minutes read at home and school. Three top readers for at-home minutes were awarded a prize each week. Classes that were in the lead received custom Whittier bookmarks along with bragging rights. Teachers in the lead for at home minutes each week received coffee cards.

On March 2nd, we again met as a school in the gymnasium for a wrap up assembly, where we recognized the schools top three individual fundraisers, and the top two individual students (most minutes read at home during the three weeks) from each classroom.

2018 Results:

  • School-wide minutes read in class: 158,458
  • Individual students' minutes read at home: 161,865
  • Teachers' minutes read at home: 8,262
  • Total Minutes read by Whittier during 2018 Read-a-Thon: 328,585
  • Fundraising total 1/29/18–3/2/18: $10,008.53

We gave out 54 gift bags loaded with books, pencils, and other small prizes, and — in keeping with our board game theme, each student awarded also received a board game, puzzle or art kit. This would not have been possible without many donations of prizes from Whittier parents/caregivers, as well as these businesses who donated books and gift cards: Magers & Quinn Booksellers, The Source Comics and Games, Wild Rumpus Books for Young Readers, and Half Price Books. Thank you to the PTA volunteers who helped us have a successful 2018 Read-a-Thon.

And last, but certainly not least, thank you to all Whittier students who demonstrated many IB attitudes and did some hard work to meet our fundraising goal! We are so proud of you!!
